The Business DVD-ROM
Take a look at some commonly asked questions relating to The Business DVD-ROM.
Mac customers running OS X 10.5 Leopard need to install QuickTime 7 from Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
If you have a technical enquiry about a multimedia product, it would help us to know the answers to the following questions:
The Business Intermediate DVD-ROM was developed in 2006, so it is not optimised for Windows Vista. However, you can install and run The Business on Windows Vista with Windows XP SP2 compatibility, on the administrator's account as an administrator. Please log on to the administrator account, run setup.exe as an administrator in Windows XP SP2 compatibility. Click right button on the setup.exe file choose properties, mark Windows XP SP2 compatibility then click right button on the setup.exe file again, choose option "run as an administrator" and install The Business. Then run in the same way, click right mouse button on the icon on the Desktop.
Q: Will The Business DVD-ROM work with Linux?
A: Unfortunately The Business DVD-ROM is not Linux compatible.
Q: Does the Advanced level of The Business have the class audio and video scripts included on the DVD-ROM?
A: The video scripts are present on The Business Advanced DVD-ROM but the class audio scripts aren't, they are however in the Student's and Teacher's Books. Mp3 files of the actual recordings are on the DVD-ROM.
The video scripts can be found in the downloadables folder, the icon for which is on the bar which is displayed across the top of each screen.
Q: Why does the Upper Intermediate install everything onto my computer whereas other levels run everything off the disc?
A: The Upper Intermediate DVD-ROM does indeed require a complete installation to the hard drive. We used a different software developer for this level, and they recommended complete installation for their software in order to achieve optimum speed and performance when running it.
The Pre-intermediate and (forthcoming) Advanced levels are from the same developer as the Intermediate level, so only the "shell" is installed to the hard drive, and content is read from the DVD drive.
Please not that all DVD-ROMS will run on a Mac but not install.
Q: When I try and install The Business DVD-ROM it comes up with a 'Virus Detected' message. What should I do?
When I try and install The Business DVD-ROM it comes up with a 'Virus Detected' message. What should I do?
A: These protection programs are reporting false positives, which means that the programs mistakenly think there's a threat when no threat exists.
Q: When I tried it on another computer than my own, the opening screen freezes when I try to write my name.
A: The application needs to have read/write access to its install folder, the screen may freeze when trying to write the users data (name in this case) to the /data folder. If you are on a network with a limited account ie: not with full admin rights) you should contact your network support and get read write access to this folder, or assign rights to yourself if not in a managed network environment.
We advise that customers press the Ignore button to overcome the problem.
When I tried to use the DVD and the setup, Antivir claims there is a virus on the DVD flashex.exe. What should I do?
There is no virus in the DVD application, however there appears to be an error in the way that this Antivirus software reacts with The Business DVD-ROM.
Detailed below is a fix of how to make the Antivirus omit the file:
- Open Configure AntiVir
- check Expert mode
- Scanner -> Scan -> Exception
- Choose flashex.exe in C:\Program Files\Macmillan\TheBusiness\Intermediate\data\fscommand
- Click Add

- Guard -> Scan -> Exception
- Choose flashex.exe again
- Click Add

When I try to download the PDF worksheet's and teacher's notes, the error message "A font contains a bad CMAp/Encoding" appears. What does this mean?
This error message appears sometimes if you have an older version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It means that we are using a newer version to create the PDFs but the older versions cannot understand some of the coding. You can download the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader for free, from their website.
