17th IATEFL/BESIG International Conference, Vienna, Austria

Over 350 teachers from more than 20 countries attended the conference.Paul Emmerson gave a fascinating talk on Improving Email Writing Skills which covered practical ideas for working on email writing with students. Activities from Email English were used to illustrate his points.The Macmillan Business English stand was overwhelmed with teachers.

In Company Elementary reflects the need for learners at this level to build a strong grammatical foundation, increase their lexical range and acquire communicative strategies for both professional and social situations. Learners progress through 20 units, which steadily build up language skills for basic survival, obtaining and sharing information, socialising and business travel.

Mark Powell spoke to a packed audience on 'The secret language of business'. His session focused on practical classroom activities to hone the 'softer', subtler business skills such as email, the telephone and 'off the record' conversations in bars, taxis, restaurants, office corridors, departure lounges etc.

All participants were given a free copy of the new In Company Upper intermediate level and came away stimulated with ideas they were able to use immediately in the classroom.

Paul Emmerson visits the Swan School, Oxford Paul Emmerson

Paul Emmerson, author of Business Grammar Builder, Business Builder and Email English, gave a fascinating talk on Intercultural Communication and Business English which offered some useful insights to the Business English teacher. The audience came away stimulated with ways to connect theory with practice and some great ideas for teaching.

In Company Upper intermediate Student's Book by Mark Powell is now available

It contains 18 progressively more challenging units organised into five categories: Talking points, Networking, Desk work, Meetings and Presenting.

The course addresses the need for learners at this level to review and explore in more depth previously studied areas of grammar and to increase their lexical range and knowledge of idiomatic expressions. Above all, the course aims to boost learners' communicative power as self-reliant speakers of English in both professional and social situations.
